Continuing with our previous post “5G + AI, On-device intelligence (Part I)”, we are now going to reimagine our daily life.

According to CISCO, 5 quintillion bytes are daily generated from IoT devices, or what is the same, 1 billion Gigabytes, or 5 Exabytes.
Okay fine, but… How Big is an Exabyte?
To put it into perspective:
- Most smartphones come with about 64GB of built-in storage.
That is .0000000064 of an Exabyte.
- Some have speculated that “5 exabytes likely equals all of the words ever spoken by humans”.
- Now that we are all connected to Skype, Zoom, for our meetings and calls… To have recorded 1 Exabyte of data, we should have started a video call 237,823 years ago.
That’s about the time modern homo sapiens emerged on the PLANET!

THE HOLY TRINITY OF INNOVATION
The Internet of Things (IoT) will undoubtedly transform the way we interact with our devices at home, at work or even in the city in which we live. However, to squeeze its true potential we cannot do it without its real driving force: Artificial Intelligence.
The growing demand for applications and solutions that combine AI and IoT means only one thing: achieve excellence, that is, BECOME SMART.
I am not talking about an unreal future.
I’m saying this is ALREADY happening. And not only this …
We are talking about a real present in which three of the most disruptive technologies converge to create something unique, unleashing the power of data even better and faster. These are:
Artificial Intelligence + 5G Networks + Big Data
- AI → Learn, process and reason information like humans through devices.
- 5G → Fifth generation of wireless communication technologies which stands out for its near-zero latency for data processing in RT.
- Big Data → Increasing volumes of data impossible to manage and process through common methods.
WHAT do we get? A smart, connected network of devices that communicate over powerful 5G networks.
What is intended to do with this combination is to try to add a cognitive and executive layer to the current functionality of devices in order to provide them with the autonomy to analyze situations and make decisions.
So where is AIoT heading next? …
BE SMART, BE CONNECTED
There are four different fields where AIoT is being a decisive factor in its growth and boom:
- SMART Wearables, where the purpose of these devices is to continuously track and monitor user habits and preferences. Its applications range from the health sector, through sports or fitness. Gartner estimates that by 2023 the global wearables market will generate around $ 87 trillion in revenue.
- SMART Homes, where communication with the different appliances, lighting or electronic devices is no longer a matter of science fiction, learning as the user, or owner, in this case, interacts with them and they learn by developing automated support. (CAGR, compound annual growth rate of 25% between 20020–2024, reaching $ 246 billion).
- SMART Cities, creating safer and more convenient spaces and cities for living, where large investments are made in public safety, energy efficiency or transportation.
- SMART Industries, aimed at carrying out a digital transformation of the processes and value chain to be more efficient and reduce human error, from the analysis of data in RT for predictive maintenance of the fleet to the implementation of sensors in the supply chain.
But that’s not all…
So, what’s next?
What other applications or fields do AI and IoT have a place in?
Edge Computing, or the ability to process data, analyze situations, evaluate possible scenarios, and make decisions from the device itself and not from a remote server, hundreds or thousands of kilometers away from the main data source.Vision AI, or running time-sensitive AI workloads on the edge for a wide range of business scenarios, such as detecting whether items are out-of-stock either on the hangers or on the store shelves or checking if every construction worker wears their hardhat.
Comprehensively, AIoT solutions are becoming a reality across every industry.Let’s continue pushing the boundaries of data processing and intelligent learning across devices.
